I know I just sent a note to this list the other day, and this is not a new trend, expect months of silence to follow. BUT, one more bit of news:

PhotoNOLA is "a monthlong celebration of photography in New Orleans." Many interesting exhibitions at many venues, with events from November 30 through December 15.

I direct your attention in particular to:

"Ellen Susan: Soldier Portraits"

December 1, 2007 - February 7, 2008.

New Orleans Photo Alliance

1111 St. Mary Street, New Orleans, LA.

Opening Reception Dec 1st, 6 - 9 pm.

Gallery Talk Dec 2nd, 6 pm.

Ellen Susan is the person occasionally referred to on this site, as well as in Letters From New Orleans, as E; that is to say: my wife. The images in "Soldier Portraits" were made using 19th-century process called wet-plate collodion, and for this project has made images of soldiers mostly from the 3rd Infantry Division of the Army, which is partly based near where we now live, in Savannah. A number of these soldiers have since deployed to Iraq, in some cases for the second or third time.

Obviously we'll be in New Orleans for this. You or your N.O. friends should stop by the show.

Hi all,

As usual it's been a while. Some of you may know, but others may not, that I got a nice opportunity to be the guest host of the excellent podcast, The Sounds In My Head.
Hello all,

Rob Walker here, of the NO NOTES blog, concerning "St. James Infirmary," New Orleans, and so on.

It's been a while since I've sent one of these notes out. Of course I always do my best to keep NO NOTES interesting, lately with YouTube videos, suggestions for things to read about New Orleans, etc.

But I'm really excited about the Q&A that went up this morning. More than a year ago, somebody suggested to me that I talk to a composer named Ezra Sims, who had done some "microtone" pieces that played off of "SJI." I didn't know what that meant. But I finally got the job done, and Mr. Sims turned out to be a wonderful interview, who made an esoteric-sounding subject easy to understand -- and had a great personal story about discovering "SJI" and what it meant to some of his own music.

Here is the link. Please feel free to pass along to anyone you think might be interested. Mr. Sims was a fine fellow, and I hope people check this out.

All best,

rw

P.S.: If any of you in New Orleans know anything about the Spirit of New Orleans Brass Band, please let me know. Thanks!

Why hello there. Rob Walker here, of Letters from New Orleans, and the "St. James Infirmary"-obsessed "no notes" web site.

I've moved that site to a new address. It's much better! And now that the awful moving and tweaking process is (pretty much) over, I should get back to actually updating it regularly. Exciting!

The new site is right here. That's http://nonotes.wordpress.com.

Hi folks,

The St. James Infirmary (+ New Orleans + music + tangents) site is slowly coming back from hiatus land. I'm pondering various changes, including maybe moving the whole shebang to a different sort of blog software. But in the meantime, the rapid pace of SJI news simply cannot be stopped! So, I've been posting, and I promised to send out one of these notes when I did that, so, here it is.
As usual, it's been a long time since I've sent anything to this list, and today's note is not exactly thrill-packed:

Because of a crush of personal and professional obligations over the next two months or so, the "no notes" site will be on hiatus until November 1. I'll resume the Rolling Jelly series around then, and start dealing with several interesting items that have piled up but that I haven't had time to deal with lately. These range from things I've been meaning to get to forever, like an entry or two on Irving Mills, to more recent bits -- including the Andy Griffith version of "SJI" that I recently heard for the first time thanks to a friendly tipster.

It's possible that if some really interesting "SJI" news comes along between now and then, I'll post about it, but things are looking pretty busy, so no promises.

Meanwhile I will keep updating my other and completely unrelated site, where there happens to be a recent music-related entry if you're interested: It's about an excellent project overseen by my friend Marc "Disquiet" Weidenbaum, building on the remixing of the famous Byrne/Eno record My Life In The Bush of Ghosts, and it's worth checking out:
http://www.murketing.com/journal/?p=161

Speaking of whic, sometime after November 1, I'm hoping there may be some news to share about a potential "no notes"/Disquiet collaboration that's been in secret talks for some weeks now.

I hope everyone is doing well, and made it through the rather grim period of "Katrina one year later" coverage in the news. Let's hope the year ahead is marked by more progress...

I'll send out another email when the site gets back to business.

Best,

Hi everyone,

A couple of things, quickly, from the land of the "no notes" Web site.

1) Today I started a new little series on the site, which will continue every Monday, on my delving into the Jelly Roll Morton / Alan Lomax interviews from 1938. I'm pretty excited about this. Here's the first part.

http://lfno.blogspot.com/2006/07/rolling-jelly-series-copyright-issues.html

2) It's rare that the Consumed column (my real gig) has any relationship to New Orleans, but I did have one recently about "Da Mayor In Your Pocket." You can check that out, if you want, through this other web site that I've started, that's more related to my NYT and other work.

http://www.murketing.com/journal/?p=49

3) Maybe most interesting: I found yet another time-wasting (for me) Web toy, called Platial.com. So I've been working on a "Platial Map" related to the book, and the web site, and so on. It's kind of fun, but hard to explain. Here it is:

http://www.platial.com/lfno/map/7548?title=The_LFNO_Map

Happy Fourth!

Hello all,

It's been quite a while since I sent anything to the "no notes" email list -- or at least quite a while since anyone who signed up for that list has received anything I've sent.

I've just finished transferring the list to a different mailing program, so hopefully this will go through (I know the last one I sent, using the service I've just dumped, never arrived in most inboxes).

I promised to let those who signed up know about "significant" updates to the "no notes" web site. Here are a couple of cool things, if you haven't been to the site in a while:

1. An interview with Mr. Robert Harwood, who has done even more research into "St. James Infirmary" than I have:
http://lfno.blogspot.com/2006/04/rakes-progress-part-one-qa-with-robert.html

[It's a four-parter, and pretty interesting.]

2. A very cool interaction with a violinist and composer named Michael Galasso, and the relationship between "St. James Infirmary" and one of his compositions:
http://lfno.blogspot.com/2006/05/story-of-blue.html

3. Some thoughts about the Hot 8 (the band whose performance of "St. James Infirmary" one night in 1998 got me started on this whole absurd journey):

Part One: http://lfno.blogspot.com/2006/05/hot-8-part-1.html
Part Two: http://lfno.blogspot.com/2006/05/hot-8-part-2.html

** ALSO:

Here are two interviews regarding the book "Letters From New Orleans":
1. From the blog of Jessica Lee Jernigan
http://jessicaleejernigan.typepad.com/jessica_lee_jernigan/2006/02/a_model_chocola.html

2. From The Savannah Morning News (which requires you to register, unfortunately, but doesn't charge anything at least; there's a picture of my dog with the article, if that provides any inventive.)
http://www.savannahnow.com/stories/022606/3675971.shtml

***** If you want off this list for any reason whatsoever, just let me know (or, more simply, unsubscribe following the directions below). No hard feelings!
