To Do In New Orleans: Photo NoLA/ "Soldier Portraits"

I know I just sent a note to this list the other day, and this is not a new trend, expect months of silence to follow. BUT, one more bit of news:

PhotoNOLA is "a monthlong celebration of photography in New Orleans." Many interesting exhibitions at many venues, with events from November 30 through December 15. I direct your attention in particular to:

"Ellen Susan: Soldier Portraits" December 1, 2007 - February 7, 2008. New Orleans Photo Alliance 1111 St. Mary Street, New Orleans, LA. Opening Reception Dec 1st, 6 - 9 pm. Gallery Talk Dec 2nd, 6 pm.

Ellen Susan is the person occasionally referred to on this site, as well as in Letters From New Orleans, as E; that is to say: my wife. The images in "Soldier Portraits" were made using 19th-century process called wet-plate collodion, and for this project has made images of soldiers mostly from the 3rd Infantry Division of the Army, which is partly based near where we now live, in Savannah. A number of these soldiers have since deployed to Iraq, in some cases for the second or third time. Obviously we'll be in New Orleans for this. You or your N.O. friends should stop by the show.

St. James Infirmary Podcast!

NO NOTES: Q&A with Ezra Sims about "SJI" and microtonal music

Hello all,

Rob Walker here, of the NO NOTES blog, concerning "St. James Infirmary," New Orleans, and so on.

It's been a while since I've sent one of these notes out. Of course I always do my best to keep NO NOTES interesting, lately with YouTube videos, suggestions for things to read about New Orleans, etc.

But I'm really excited about the Q&A that went up this morning. More than a year ago, somebody suggested to me that I talk to a composer named Ezra Sims, who had done some "microtone" pieces that played off of "SJI." I didn't know what that meant. But I finally got the job done, and Mr. Sims turned out to be a wonderful interview, who made an esoteric-sounding subject easy to understand -- and had a great personal story about discovering "SJI" and what it meant to some of his own music.

The St. James Infirmary (+ New Orleans + music + tangents) site is slowly coming back from hiatus land. I'm pondering various changes, including maybe moving the whole shebang to a different sort of blog software. But in the meantime, the rapid pace of SJI news simply cannot be stopped! No Notes Hiatus Announcement

Hello all,
As usual, it's been a long time since I've sent anything to this list, and today's note is not exactly thrill-packed:

Because of a crush of personal and professional obligations over the next two months or so, the "no notes" site will be on hiatus until November 1. I'll resume the Rolling Jelly series around then, and start dealing with several interesting items that have piled up but that I haven't had time to deal with lately. These range from things I've been meaning to get to forever, like an entry or two on Irving Mills, to more recent bits -- including the Andy Griffith version of "SJI" that I recently heard for the first time thanks to a friendly tipster.

It's possible that if some really interesting "SJI" news comes along between now and then, I'll post about it, but things are looking pretty busy, so no promises.

Meanwhile I will keep updating my other and completely unrelated site, where there happens to be a recent music-related entry if you're interested: It's about an excellent project overseen by my friend Marc "Disquiet" Weidenbaum, building on the remixing of the famous Byrne/Eno record My Life In The Bush of Ghosts, and it's worth checking out:

A couple of things, quickly, from the land of the "no notes" Web site.

1) Today I started a new little series on the site, which will continue every Monday, on my delving into the Jelly Roll Morton / Alan Lomax interviews from 1938. I'm pretty excited about this. Here's the first part.

"No Notes" Email

It's been quite a while since I sent anything to the "no notes" email list -- or at least quite a while since anyone who signed up for that list has received anything I've sent.
